I am participating in the Walk for Wellness House on Sunday, May 2, 2021!
No matter how someone has been affected by cancer — maybe they've been diagnosed, have a family member who’s living with cancer, or are a caregiver — everyone is welcome at Wellness House. The Wellness House provides information, classes, counseling, and more to patients and their families - all at no charge to the patient (or family). All Wellness House programs and services are led by experts - they offer more than 300 programs every month!
Everything Wellness House does is to prepare and empower people to fully live life with cancer and beyond. Wellness House has been doing this important work for more than 28 years. They are able to offer these critical services, at no cost to those affected by cancer, thanks to generous support from donors.
I started participating in the Walk for Wellness House in 2016 after my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and was participating in many of the programs offered at the Wellness House. It provided my sister a wonderful support network and she enjoyed the classes and group sessions she attended. Being a cancer patient, having a supportive network is extremely important in the healing process. While family and friends are so very important, someone who is "walking in the same shoes" can more clearly understands what the cancer patient is dealing with.
I think everyone can acknowledge that 2020 was a challenging year for everyone. In March, Maureen began a clinical trial as the treatments had stopped working. I was diagnosed with DCIS in March, had surgery and began treatment in April as the world shut down around us. Now I felt the label of “I have cancer” and what does that mean. Maureen was my little sister and friend who talked me through the diagnosis, what I should ask the doctors and providing moral support, even while battling her own disease.
I knew Maureen’s cancer was not curable, but we all prayed for a miracle and her strength to fight the ravages the treatment was taking and hoping it would slow the progression of the disease. But that was not to be, on July 8th we lost Maureen to cancer. The number of lives she impacted with family, friends, neighbors, work colleagues, and friends of friends was reflected in messages and notes. Her spirit will live on in her family and her three daughters will forever miss their mom who was their world.
So, I walk this year in memory of my little sister, my dear friend and keeper of secrets who will forever be missed but I know she is at peace with the loved ones we have lost before. This cause is very important to me and I hope you will join me by making a donation.* Thank you for your help!
