I Am Walking for Wellness House. Here's Why:
On a warm July morning last year I went in for my annual screening mammogram and came out with a possible cancer diagnosis. It turned out to be early stage breast cancer---the best kind to have if you're gonna have breast cancer. Little did I know, however, that the physical part of this diagnosis was just the beginning for me. You see, I lost my Mom in 1981 to breast cancer---she was 54 and I had just graduated from high school. So I have a long history with this beast, and the mental and emotional aspect is absolutely daunting. Just the words---carcinoma, chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy---are terrifying and are the worst part of this journey. Fortunately, the surgeon got it all and I didn't need chemotherapy or radiation---just a ton of monitoring and a daily pill to keep the cancer from recurring. But the emotional scars remain, especially when routine screening exams and doctor appointments come around every 3-6 months.
My doctors and a very good friend living with cancer recommended me to Wellness House and it's been a huge sanity-check. At no cost to me or my family (or our insurance company) we have resources like breast cancer support groups, screening anxiety support groups, dietary/nutrition advice, exercise advice and much more at our disposal.
No matter how someone has been affected by cancer — maybe they've been diagnosed, have a family member who’s living with cancer, or are a caregiver — they're welcome at Wellness House. People with cancer and their loved ones receive education, support and guidance from the oncology professionals and participants throughout their journey with cancer and beyond.
You can't put a price on what Wellness House provides. So we don't. Thanks to the generosity of individuals, foundations and corporations like you that provide gifts to Wellness House, there's absolutely no charge for all programs and services.
I am participating in the Walk for Wellness House because I know how important support and community is for people impacted by cancer, and I want to ensure their access to the life-changing programs and services at Wellness House.
I hope you will join me by making a donation to help me reach my fundraising goals, but more importantly to help people affected by cancer in our community.
