Heard of Zebras?
Welcome to our Team Page!
Cancer can feel overwhelming, for patients and their families. It can be confusing and frightening. Fortunately, when it comes to living with cancer, Wellness House is there.
The welcoming, encouraging feeling starts the moment you walk in the door. They aren’t located in a hospital or an office building. Rather, they are in a warm, friendly home in a neighborhood where you will find caring people with the expertise and eagerness to help. Their hope is that people will feel less alone, more informed, and more empowered to take on the challenge of facing cancer.
Why ZEBRAS? As a patient with a rare cancer, Neuroendocrine Carcinoid Cancer, I found a wonderful support group at the Wellness House. Our Foundation has adopted the Zebra as it's mascot for this cancer. This is because in medical school students are taught, "When you hear hoof beats, think horses not Zebras." Physicians are taught to focus on the most likely of possibilities NOT the unusual ones. In the case of this rare disease, physicians need to look for a Zebra! Neuroendocrine Carcinoid Cancer is often misdiagnosed for years as Crohn's Disease and/or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). This delay in diagnosis contributes to tumor metastasis that is irreversible.
Our support group has brought peace of mind to so many Carcinoid paients and their caregivers! We are here to spread the word that the Wellness House is a healing place for so many. I hope you find it in your heart to support this worthwhile cause.
